For this reading blog, I read an article about four new trends emerging in the digital art world. Seeking substance, the first trend, describes digital artists’ movement to develop their own specific art style. With the abundance of AI-generated media we see today, an artist’s style is an indicator of their humanity. As more people strive to support human-made art, they look for this human touch. I slightly disagree, however. AI art itself is not dangerous and can be a very useful tool for an artist. The intentions behind and use of AI can be pure and an asset to an artist, especially in the digital art world. The second trend, the resurgence of the niche, occurs when an artist makes a specific brand for themselves. Finding a subject, style, utility, etc. that appeals to a certain audience creates a space in which a community can be formed. This community fosters the growth of the online presence of an artist. Dreams join the scene refers to Procreate Dreams, in which artists are given the tools to make 2D animations. The upward trend of these animations shows learning and growth in digital painting. With this comes 2.5D animation and therefore an opportunity to discover and develop new styles and creative expressions. Finally, AI overexposure emphasizes the need for visual literacy. As we discussed in class during the first project, as well as in the first reading blog article, visual literacy is necessary in our curriculum. Usually, AI images feature inhuman characteristics, even if they are slight, and give the viewer an idea that the image is AI-generated. The article speaks with an anti-AI tone and seems to make an argument against AI being used for art. It stresses the importance of human-made art and discredits an artist’s use of AI. As previously stated, I disagree with this sentiment and believe that AI can be used for good and is a useful tool for an artist. I use AI when developing ideas for a painting and in digital art, and it has allowed me to deepen the meaning behind my art and create more quickly than before. AI has a place in the art world and does not have to be our enemy.
