On February 22nd, 2024, the first piece of digital artwork to exist outside of Earth landed on the moon. The digital drive containing one of the “most significant AI data paintings” (Designboom 2024) traveled into space via moon lander by Intuitive Machines and SpaceX’s Odysseus. The project, titled “Human Cell Atlas Project” made history, earning it the right to be considered a hard drive time capsule museum. The idea behind the project is to reflect the current state of humanity when it will be discovered by moon visitors in the future. In partnership with CERN, the project has been in the works for years and exists in two formats. A ‘digital twin’ of the work exists 238,855 miles away on Earth, currently residing and being shown in Dubai at the Art Dubai Digital fair. All collaborators involved have been praised for the project, not only for the quality of the art itself, but most notably in paving the way for innovation in the art world. On Earth, the work was presented as “a large-scale installation located at the main entrance of the Art Dubai Digital in front of Mina A’Salam Jumeirah Hotel, and in a gallery booth setting featuring a selection of smaller scale collectors works inside the fair” (Designboom 2024).
This article really inspired me in terms of how limitless art can be. If we can present art on the moon and in space, then what is the possibility of art existing outside of our world? Thinking about the vastness of the universe and how to reach past the bubble of humanity motivates me to think bigger and not be bound by what is comfortable.
